The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a tropical low will develop in the North Coral Sea later this week and could develop into a cyclone from Sunday.

The forecast comes as heavy rainfall is predicted for the Far North through to Thursday, following what has been the latest start to the wet season on record.

Miriam Bradbury from the Bureau says the area between Ayr and Cooktown will receive the heaviest and most persistent rainfall.
