In a world full of AAA game releases that can be unpolished or imperfect it’s easy to see why people are turning to indy gaming to find hidden gems that maybe don’t get the attention they deserve. That’s why we are highlighting this Kickstarter game that’s been in development for quite some time.

This retro-style 2D platformer is a barrel of fun and a wonderful reminder of the great arcade classics as you set out on an action-packed platforming quest across the mystical lands of Talonreach.

You play as Hatch, a flightless hawk mountaineer equipped with your trusty Hookshot. You use this device to access platform areas you can’t reach by jumping. This allows you to collect the gems and other elements to complete the puzzles and eventually finish the many levels on offer.

More elements are introduced as you continue through the game, giving greater challenges and fun enhancements that keep you entertained for hours.

This reimagining of the 3DS title “Chicken Wiggle” introduces a hook shot in place of the worm that gives it a very classic “The Legend of Zelda” fantasy feel Paired with what feels like an almost advanced version of games like Dig Dug and that’s really what I enjoyed about playing this title, the fact that it feels like a real homage to some of my favourite arcade classics of all time, while at the same time presenting something new.

I’ve put a solid number of hours into “Hatch Tales: A Heroic Hookshot Adventure” and I love how it feels like a finished product. It’s easy to pick up and get involved in at any given moment, but also easy to put down if you are called away by real-life. The characters are great and the animation is really pleasant on the eye by not being overly complicated but still delivering a vibrant fantasy world.

The best part is the price, at around $30 you are getting a game that entertains you for a good amount of time at a dollar value that won’t break the bank.

Hatch Tales: A Hookshot Adventure is an 8 out of 10. We reviewed the game on the Nintendo Switch Console
