Popular swimming spots on the Tablelands will be patrolled by police and rangers this Australia Day.
Queensland Police and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will be ensuring locals and visitors are doing the right thing and staying safe.
QPWS Ranger in Charge Ian McConnell says rangers are expecting large numbers of visitors to flock to the cool waters of Lake Eacham, Tinaroo and Davies Creek this Australia Day.
“Most people look after these valuable protected areas and respect other visitors, but unfortunately the behaviour of a relative few can negatively impact the experiences of others and damage protected plants and wildlife,” Mr McConnell says.
“Rangers will be working with the Queensland Police Service over coming days to ensure the family-friendly nature of these sites is maintained.
“Rangers will also be working to protect the natural values of the protected areas and assisting local families and tourists to enjoy their visit, while limiting their impact on the environment we all enjoy.”
Officers will be taking a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour, misconduct, domestic animals on national parks, littering, glass and the consumption of alcohol on Lake Eacham.
Rangers and police both have the power to direct those doing the wrong thing to leave.
Police will also be patrolling nearby roads and conducting random breath tests of motorists.
“We encourage everyone to be respectful, bin your rubbish or take it with you if the bins are full, remember that not everyone enjoys your music, stay out of restricted areas, and leave your pets at home. Assistance dogs are permitted.”
